The range of myths associated with the practice of Chiropractic includes thoughts of it as an assault on the system to thoughts of it as the absolute and immediate cures for all ailments.

When dispelling myths, it is important to remember that the best weapon is being willing to research the topic beyond what you may hear from friends, family and co-workers. By choosing to make informed decisions, myths can be dispelled that may impact upon your final decision, either positively or negatively.

1. Once I start – I Can’t Stop:

The decision to undergo Chiropractic treatments does not have to mean a life long commitment. Some issues can be treated over short term while others may require a more lengthy treatment schedule.

As with any exercise program, diet or regime, you can choose to stop treatments at any time. It is important to remember that the decision has to be yours. Equally important is that stopping chiropractic treatments does not prevent you from enjoying the benefits of chiropractic treatments at a later stage in your life.

2. Chiropractic Assaults the Body

Some people may have a difficult time dispelling this myth in its entirety, but if you can gain a deeper understanding of what the affects are upon the body then you may be able to downgrade your fears.

First, chiropractors have often been labelled “bone-crackers”. The sound with which bones move back into alignment may sound like a crack or pop and thus the term was coined.

There are several schools of chiropractic thought and techniques some do include psychical manipulations accomplished through applying pressure to affect change in the alignment of the bones. Other practitioners prefer to use a tool know as an activator, which allows a low level of pressure to be applied to the area requiring adjustment. Another school of thought uses gentle touch pressure points and is known as network chiropractic.

If after you have done some research you think you want to go ahead with treatments remember to ask the chiropractor any questions you might have. These individuals wish to help you make decisions that you are comfortable with and are not encapsulated by fear.

3. Treatments Cause More Harm Than Good

Red flags should go up any time you hear this statement in regard to any medical treatments. The physical manipulations used within the chiropractic field may have unanticipated results, as the body works to correct its alignment.

For example, if your neck has been very sore and a chiropractor provides an adjustment, you may in fact feel worse the next day. This does not mean that the treatment has harmed you, rather that your body is trying to adjust to the position of the vertebrae in your neck. This process involves muscular tensions as well and therefore clouds of the issue of the true benefits of chiropractic treatment.

4. Chiropractic Treatments Hurt

It would not be accurate to make this statement, discomfort can be classified as hurt or pain, but you may also receive similar results from treatments such as massage, physiotherapy or hydrotherapy.

Discomfort is not unreasonable, however the majority of patients would not typically say that it hurts to get an adjustment done.

5. Chiropractic Practitioners Don’t Have To Go To School

This myth has persisted largely due to chiropractic being set aside from other specialities within the medical field. In order to be a chiropractor an individual must complete a three-year university program that makes them eligible to continue on to the second part of the training – a four-year program. Much like other medical professionals, the subject matter includes: Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Diagnosis, Neurology, X-Ray, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Orthopedics. In addition, courses are taken on Spinal Adjustments, Nutrition and Advanced Radiology.
