Chiropractic has long been an accepted form of 'alternative treatment'. The decision to enter into such treatment options must be carefully evaluated by each individual. This is the first in a series of articles that will talk about the development of chiropractic, techniques, philosophies and how to determine if Chiropractic is a possible answer to add to your wellness plan.

The manipulation of the body to achieve ‘relief’ from pain or disease dates back to the ancient times of Hippocrates, The Father of Medicine (460-370 BC) throughout history and throughout the continents.

Daniel David Palmer, born in Canada practiced the art of magnetic healing in Davenport Iowa. It was during this time that Palmer would deliver the first known chiropractic adjustment to Harvey Lillard. By treating misaligned vertebrae within Lillard’s neck, Lillard regained his hearing. Palmer was the first to admit that he was not the first person who managed to restore a badly positioned vertebra, but he was the first to use a short lever technique to return the vertebrae back to a normal position. Chiropractic was born in 1895 as a result of Palmer’s technique.

Palmer established the first Chiropractic College, located in Davenport, Iowa, in 1895. It was his contention that a body would function properly, without illness or disease if all bones, nerves and blood vessels were arranged correctly. It was this concept that led to the understanding that a misaligned spine could be cause of illness or loss of overall wellness.

Palmer’s son would take over the school when his father was imprisoned for operating without a medical license. Bartlett Joshua (B.J.) would be a flamboyant promoter of the concepts behind Chiropractic.

The Chiropractic field has blossomed and now not only houses hundreds of practitioners but also provides a multitude of Chiropractic Treatment techniques.
