f this sounds like a familiar refrain to you, then you are not alone. Recognising the need to take care of oneself is often overlooked in order to take care of others.

Traditionally, we have been taught to put the needs of others before our own. Now society is starting to focus on fixing the ills that this practice provided. People are becoming more and more aware of their shortcomings and are seeking to help themselves.

Some members of society still believe that self-help is a fad and will disappear as quickly as the hula-hoop and that it might reoccur for short periods of time as a resurgence of the fads in pop culture.

It is becoming apparent that self-help is here to stay. People who were formerly sceptical of this field are now coming to realise that there may be some lasting benefit to looking into the problems faced by individuals and the existence of tools that they can employ themselves.

The self-help industry is perhaps one of the fastest growing industries outside of e-commerce and the computer industry. Topics for discussion include, but are not limited to: self-esteem, pain management, self-hypnosis, relationships, meditation, stress management, and depression management.

Chances are if you are experiencing a problem there is likely to be written resources available for you in the self-help section of your local library or bookstore. Self-help has also moved onto the World Wide Web, sites offering self-analysis techniques, mood therapies and other options are cropping up at an enormous rate.

The most important thing to remember is that you cannot help others without first helping yourself. Learn what issues are important to you and start working on them. If it is a fear of success or a fear of failure, you can employ techniques to help you escape the confines the fears have been placing on you. Once you understand your own issues it is even easier to understand the problems of others and to help them to find their own solutions.

The reason why so many find self-help books and programs successful is that the individuals have been empowered to help themselves. It is true that the person always had that power, but often individuals feel that they are powerless to do anything to change the paths of their lives. The self-help philosophy is to give the people back the power over their own lives.

Self-help cannot possibly provide all the answers, so be ready to seek professional assistance if the issue seems to be unaffected by your attempts to help yourself.
