Hole in Your Health:

When you get up in the morning and look in the mirror, do you see a healthy person in the reflection? Wait just one second before answering that question…does something seem to be missing from the reflection?

Maybe you see an image with little energy or vitality. Makes sense, many of us are not particularly perky first thing in the morning. When you look at yourself in the mirror later the same day do you still see the same person starring back at you?

If you were to ask the average person what health means to them you would probably hear comments such as: being free from colds and influenza, and being free from ear infections and similar complaints.

Sadly this picture of health has a big hole right in the very core. Health is comprised of more than physical well being it must also include mental and spiritual aspects to provide a clearer picture of the foundation of health.

It would not be accurate to stop here, in order to maintain your health it is important to identify the objects that help you maintain your overall health.

First, the body is comprised mostly of water. If you do not replenish your water supply then your body cannot function properly. This will eventually lead to physical symptoms being presented by your body. Some of these symptoms can include a feeling of extreme thirst, lack of energy and dry skin.

Second, the body has a very sound structure to keep it operating in what we would identify as a normal fashion. This structure includes the spinal column, the nervous system, the respiratory system, the muscular system, the digestive system and the circulatory system. Imagine if just one of these systems were not cooperating with the others, the result could literally be chaos. For example, when the respiratory system begins to respond to perceived threats from the atmosphere as in an asthma attack, the respiratory system goes into panic mode. When the respiratory system deviates from its normal path the other systems begin to follow suit. The nervous system tells the circulatory system that the brain isn’t getting enough oxygen and so the circulatory system increases the rate at which the heart pumps in order to send more oxygenated blood to the brain and other vital organs. The muscles, receiving messages from the nervous system and working in an effort to support the new posture employed during breathing difficulties, become fatigued and the digestive system slows down.

 

Third, the brain has the ability to think and while this may sound advantageous, it really can present a problem. It is with this complex tool that we weave extensive thought patterns often leading to confusion, disillusionment, depression, and anger. When the mind operates in a strictly negative cycle, there is an adverse affect on the body and how it operates. Negativity and stress combine to fatigue and cause distress or dis-ease to our systems, resulting in development of a physical problem. It doesn’t end there, however, the mind has its own afflictions, which may operate in the absence of physical manifestations. The scope of mental conditions and disorders is amazing and it is difficult to say with any certainty, which came first, the physical disorder or the mental disorder.

The final piece of the puzzle is even more complex; it embodies our emotional states with an emphasis on spirituality. If you just felt a roadblock pop up in your way, you are not alone. Many people feel that if they do not attend a church then they are not spiritual beings. It is most important for you to consider carefully what spirituality can mean to you. Each person would have a different definition, based on their own personal experiences and beliefs, but might focus on the following concepts: believing in a higher power, observing nature and our interaction within that setting, believing in a set of goals or reasons for your life, and recognizing that events may actually occur for a pre-defined purpose. It is important to develop your own definition. Emotions are directly related to spirituality, when we express an emotion such as elation or anger, we are drawing on the guidelines we have defined for our lives to tell us what is right or wrong.

Health must include all of the aspects, in balance. If one system begins to become unbalanced, then quickly the others will follow. You cannot restore health without first understanding how the pieces of the puzzle fit together. Once you put the puzzle together you will see yourself in terms of holistic health.
