Acupuncture is an ancient practise for healing the diseases of the body. The Western world is starting to embrace the philosophy of Acupuncture and is beginning to admit that this practice may in fact provide lasting results.

Determined to lessen the pain from injuries I decided that I would give this therapy a try. Never mind the concept of not liking needles, the thought of wearing needles through my skin, looking like a porcupine, was hard to accept, but I did it nonetheless.

Arriving at my appointment the anxiety level was already beginning to raise, the treatment room, if you could call it that was not sheltered from outside noise. The Acupuncturist operated out of a physiotherapy clinic and combined her knowledge of this ancient art with her physiotherapy practice.

Wanting to explain what was going to happen, in terms of placing the needles into the skin at specific pressure points, combined with seeing the acupuncture needles did little to make me feel more at ease.

II was determined that this therapy would work, but I wonder if deep down I felt that it wasn’t going to be effective. The strongest part of any therapy is the belief or disbelief that a particular therapy will work.

The experience, although not all bad, was fraught with pain. The practitioner almost succeeded in breaking one of the needles off in my shoulder. While I don’t blame this person it made me less than ready to consider trying this form of treatment again.

Leaving the clinic, feeling much like a pin cushion I made up my mind to stick with less evasive treatments. If you feel that you would like to try acupuncture but are deathly afraid of needles think seriously about acupressure, an equally effective alternative.
