I am sure that globally we can all agree that health is very important. What is not likely to be agreed upon is the actual definition of health. The varying schools of thought on health relate directly to the different philosophies of healing.

If you were to take a the definition from The New American Webster Handy College Dictionary, meaning of the word health imply: 1. freedom from disease; good condition, normal and efficient functioning or 2. bodily condition

In the strictest sense of the word I am sure we would all agree, but health begins to take on its own meaning due to personal events and experiences. If an individual rarely is inflicted with anything other than the occasional cold, his/her idea of health will vary greatly from the individual who has been involved in a long battle with a disease such as cancer.

What it all comes down to is that we need to know how we personally define health. Without knowledge of your own personal definition it becomes extremely difficult to take actions to ensure your good health. What works for one person will not necessarily work for another. Individual differences in philosophy may occur readily within the same family. In such cases, it is important to understand how the members of the family think about health.

The most important thing is to remember that health truly does matter. Recognising this fact is the first step to creating a more healthful you.
